The only effective defense against a nuclear strike is to prevent the weapons from being launched. The methods for accomplishing this run the gamut from diplomacy (preferable) through an ever more risky set of actions.
But nothing in the Golden Dome will get the job done.
What's making today's Democratic Party weaker is imitating the MAGA movement, where we always proposed as being right, and the other side is always defined as being TOTALLY WRONG! Always, always, always, in every circumstance, on every tiny detail etc. We on the left are becoming our own version of Tucker Carlson, and it's not going to serve us well.
Example: I'm a 60s hippy who has been a Democrat since before many readers on Substack were born. And the leftist tribal chanting here on Substack is turning me off. How is it ever going to appeal to people like Nikki Haley voters, those we need to persuade to get back to winning?????
Joe- Why let facts get in the way of a good story? We’re less than 3 months into this moron’s term and we’ve seen the wrecking ball that he’s unleashed and heard more gibberish than I believed possible. Can he possibly keep this up for 45 more months?
Yesterday’s performance was an embarrassment. During Biden’s 4 years, the DJIA doubled. In the first 3 months of the ‘economy’ President, its lost over 10% of its value. I know…I’m an involuntary contributor to that dumpster fire.
Shouldn't they be working on a force field, like the shields in Star Trek? Then they could also protect the entire planet from attack by extraterrestrials too!
Bryen writes, "A US Iron Dome is a huge challenge but it is needed and indispensable before one of our adversaries concludes destroying the US can easily be accomplished."
Both Bryen and Cirincione appear determined to ignore what seems to be the best argument against a US Iron Dome. It would advance this conversation if they would write an article explaining why. I'm open to the possibility I'm missing something here.
Nukes delivered by ICBM leave a trail straight back to the sender. That's not a very smart way to attack the US, unless one is a Muslim fundamentalist eager to meet their maker.
A smarter way to attack the US would be to smuggle a small number of nukes in to the country and use them to terrify the population and generate social and political chaos. Yesterday Oklahoma City vanished. Will your city be next? Should you move your family out of the city in to the country? Do city services start to collapse when lots of people answer yes? When will the attacks end? Are we all going to die? Etc, etc.
Civilization is built upon a thin veneer fantasy that life will always go on as before, thus it's worth it to spend your life working at a job you hate etc. Puncture that thin veneer by any method, and society begins to unravel. Imho, this is part of what happened with the hippy movement in the 60s. We grew up as kids in the duck and cover 50s, and from that experience of existential threat, decided to "eat, drink and be merry, for tomorrow we die". Many chose to abandon society, move out in to the woods, and enjoy drugs and free love with whatever time is left to us, or so the story went at the time.
What I'm not clear on and would love to learn more about is how traceable a smuggled nuke would be. And, how capable is the government at finding smuggled nukes hidden buried in corn fields all over the country?

Speaking of stupidity...

Shit, just build the Iron Dome out of…Iron!
I'm old enough to remember when Al Gore debated Ross Perot on CNN!
I find your argument for the ridiculousness of Trump's Golden Dome vision compelling but wonder what you think of Stephen Bryen's take on this: https://weapons.substack.com/p/the-us-will-build-an-iron-dome-air?utm_source=publication-search
