A lot of people are all wound up right now trying to blame Trump and America for security problems in Europe. What they should be asking instead is why the EU, being TEN TIMES richer than Russia, has consistently been unwilling to take responsibility for it's own defense.
To illustrate the absurdity of the situation, imagine that America expected the EU to be responsible for defending America's southern border. That would be ridiculous, right?
Right now, today, all the European countries have tanks, planes and troops that they could be driving across the border in to Ukraine. There is no threat to Europe other than Russia, so what are those forces accomplishing parked in their home countries?? What are these EU forces afraid of? Russia can't even beat Ukraine, how could it possibly defeat Ukraine PLUS the EU?
The reason EU forces aren't already in Ukraine is that after decades of complacent dependency on America, the EU assumed that it's was America's job to deal with Ukraine. EU leaders like that American taxpayers have long subsidized European defense budgets. They like this arrangement because it allows EU politicians to spend more on the European welfare state benefits that are popular with European voters.
It's truly unfortunate that a necessary transition is happening while Ukraine is in crisis. But that crisis is a necessary pre-condition for getting Europeans to take responsibility for their own defense. Without a crisis, EU leaders have proven that all they will do is talk, talk, talk for years and years, and never get around to taking responsibility for their own defense.
Yes, yes, yes, Trump is a world class asshole, we all agree on that. But by forcing the EU to do what it should have willingly done decades ago, Trump's policies will make both the EU and America safer. And it will convert the EU from being chronic dependents of America, to real allies who can carry their own weight. And with America thus freed to focus on the threat from China, it should make the entire world safer.
